Dr. Sean M. Finnie is a highly accomplished cereal chemist and the Founder and Principal Consultant at Sif Grains, LLC, based in Spokane, Washington. He concurrently serves as the Interim Executive Director for the Wheat Quality Council (WQC) and continues to support the academic community as a volunteer adjunct faculty member in food science and molecular plant sciences at Washington State University. Dr. Finnie’s extensive expertise spans academia, corporate research and development, and federal research oversight, positioning him as a leading authority on grain functionality, cultivar genetics, and agricultural supply chain optimization. Dr. Finnie earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Food Science and Technology from the University of Idaho and a Ph.D. in Grain Science and Industry from Kansas State University. He completed advanced postdoctoral research at KU Leuven in Belgium. Before establishing Sif Grains, LLC, he served as the Director of the USDA-ARS Western Wheat Quality Laboratory in Pullman, Washington, managing the largest wheat and pulse crop evaluation program in the western United States. His corporate trajectory includes key scientific leadership roles, including Senior Manager of Research and Development at Bay State Milling Company and Principal Scientist for bakery applications at Cargill. A dedicated leader within the global scientific community, Dr. Finnie sits on the Board of Directors for the Cereal & Grains Association (formerly AACCI) and previously served as the Associate Editor of Cereal Chemistry. Through Sif Grains, LLC, he works directly with flour millers, plant breeders, and biotech firms to bridge the gap between crop genetics and commercial functionality, ensuring that farmers and grain handlers can maximize the market value and processing performance of sustainable crops.
